Brussels Nuclear Energy Summit fails without Russia, Iran — diplomat

Maria Zakharova pointed to the fact that on the eve of the summit the world media published information that at its conclusion a 'global' document - a joint declaration would be adopted

MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. The Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels failed without the participation of Russia and Iran, this sphere should remain out of the political conjuncture, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

According to the diplomat, Western countries "like to say that everything that happens under their leadership is historic, global and exceptional."

"Except that for some reason the forum (the Nuclear Energy Summit - TASS) did not invite key Eurasian states engaged in peaceful atom at the global level, including Russia. Iran, whose nuclear program has been the focus of world media attention for years, wasn’t invited either. Specialists immediately see that the 'historic summit' has failed," she wrote on her Telegram channel.

Zakharova also pointed to the fact that on the eve of the summit the world media published information that at its conclusion "a 'global' document - a joint declaration would be adopted." "The loud promises turned out to be a flop: the press release does not mention any declaration, apparently it simply does not exist," the spokeswoman pointed out.

"Those who sincerely want to promote the development of nuclear energy must realize that it must remain outside the political conjuncture," the diplomat concluded.

The Nuclear Energy Summit was held in Brussels on March 21-22. Organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Belgium, it is an expert conference attended by ministers, members and heads of government of Western countries, as well as Armenia, China, Serbia, South Korea and Japan. Its main objective is to promote nuclear energy as relevant to the EU's green agenda.
