Leaders of Russia, Egypt, Germany may visit Turkey in April — newspaper
A diplomat in Ankara stressed that a potential visit by the Russian leader is in the pipeline, and promised to announce the date for the visit after the two sides reach agreement
ISTANBUL, April 2. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier may visit Turkey in April following the March 31 local elections in the country, the Milliyet newspaper said, citing sources.
While officials have not yet confirmed this information, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced during a traditional iftar dinner organized as part of Ramadan after the municipal elections that Putin might visit. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that no exact timeframes for Putin’s visit are available yet, but that they will be coordinated via diplomatic channels.
A diplomat in Ankara told TASS that a potential visit by the Russian leader is in the pipeline, and promised to announce the date for the visit after the two sides reach agreement.
El-Sisi’s visit to Ankara would mark a major milestone in light of the normalization of relations between Turkey and Egypt. Steinmeier’s visit will be the first by a German leader in a decade, according to Milliyet, which also announced that Erdogan will travel to neighboring Iraq later this month to discuss cooperation in fighting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party or PKK, which is outlawed in Turkey.
In May, Erdogan plans to receive Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who will travel to the country on a return visit following Erdogan’s trip to Athens last year. The Turkish leader is also due to travel to the United States the same month.
