Ambassador says no discussions of Armenia joining Russia-Belarus union state
"As a Russian person and an ambassador, I sympathize with this [trend], but I am unaware if the issue has ever been on our political agenda," Sergey Kopyrkin noted
YEREVAN, March 29. /TASS/. Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin dismissed as untrue statements by some Armenian officials alleging that Russia has been forcing the former Soviet republic to join its union with Belarus.
"I wonder myself why this topic has arisen. There are public organizations and political forces pushing for this process here, but they are unrelated to our interstate relationship or our interstate dialogue," the Russian diplomat told Armenia's 24News media outlet in an interview.
"As a Russian person and an ambassador, I sympathize with this [trend], but I am unaware if the issue has ever been on our political agenda," he added.
Earlier, Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan and other Armenian officials alleged that Russia was "seeking to force Armenia into the Union State."
