Presidential 'super-majority' formed in Russia after election
"We could not observe anything similar throughout Russia’s election history going back to 1991," the director of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center stressed
MOSCOW, March 18. /TASS/. The Russian presidential election resulted in the establishment of the largest political coalition in modern Russian history, a "presidential super-majority," Valery Fyodorov, director of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM), said.
"What came out of Russian President Vladimir Putin's election win is a presidential super-majority. It is the most widespread political coalition among all that ever existed in modern Russia," Fyodorov said during a roundtable of the Experimental Institute for Social Research on the outcome of the Russian presidential campaign.
According to him, the coalition consists of about 76 mln people. "It is an unprecedentedly high figure. We could not observe anything similar throughout Russia’s election history going back to 1991. This is no accident. It is a reality that will steer our political development for years to come," Fyodorov said.
He recalled that, after the presidential election in 2006, people were talking about a "Putin majority." "This was a new coalition that became a pillar of support for Putin and for the policy changes which he laid out for Russia," Fyodorov said, adding that the super-majority "provides for a much more serious mandate."
According to the sociologist, the coalition represents Russians who support the special military operation, who want a stable, powerful country, a better future and security, and it believes Putin is a man whose values align with theirs.
Another factor is the upbeat mood that has been registered by sociologists since last spring. "Negative emotions are on the decline, people have begun to be accustomed to the situation, so now optimistic views prevail. Putin enhances this optimism and promises a better future," Fyodorov said.
Besides, Fyodorov said, people also want a person who has presidential qualities. "In this regard, Vladimir Putin has been actively demonstrating the complex of qualities that is ideal for a president," Fyodorov concluded.
