Kremlin highlights need to clarify situation around Armenian membership in Moscow-led bloc
Dmitry Peskov declined to answer a question about how the CSTO viewed such statements by Nikol Pashinyan
MOSCOW, March 13. /TASS/. Moscow will maintain contact with Yerevan to clarify the situation around the future of Armenia’s membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Yerevan would withdraw from the CSTO if the organization failed to comply with its obligations and define its zone of responsibility.
"Certainly, we have heard these statements. Clearly, there is much work to be done. We need to maintain contact with our Armenian partners both within the CSTO and at the bilateral level. We will work to sort things out and hold consultations regarding the statements that the [Armenian] prime minister made," Peskov noted.
He declined to answer a question about how the CSTO viewed such statements by Pashinyan. "That’s a question for the CSTO. We should not speak for the CSTO," the Russian presidential press secretary noted.
When asked if the current situation could be grounds for convening an extraordinary summit of the intergovernmental mutual defense organization, Peskov said: "Once again, it’s up to the CSTO to decide. Of course, there is certain work to be done within the CSTO," the Kremlin spokesman concluded.
