Russian envoy warns against overestimating UK-Ukraine security agreement
"This document is a memorandum of intent that enshrines British policy towards Ukraine in terms of providing it with weapons, financial assistance, promises of reconstruction and all such things," Andrey Kelin pointed out
LONDON, March 7. /TASS/. The security agreement that the United Kingdom and Ukraine signed in January is aimed at enshrining London’s Kiev policy for decades to come but there is no guarantee that it will be implemented, Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin told TASS.
"The document marks an important stage in relations between Ukraine and the United Kingdom so it should not be underestimated. Nor should it be overestimated. In fact, it’s nothing but a memorandum of intent that enshrines British policy towards Ukraine in terms of providing it with weapons, financial assistance, promises of reconstruction and all such things," Kelin pointed out.
"It is meant for a situation where there is a change in government and parliament following British parliamentary elections or if changes take place in Ukraine. That said, the goal is to keep the current policy unchanged for decades to come," the Russian envoy explained.
"However, we know well from experience that such documents are not treaties so the parties either don’t implement them or fall short of implementing them, or even replace them with something else rather quickly," he added.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a bilateral security agreement on January 12. The document addresses intelligence sharing, cooperation in cybersecurity, and the training of medical workers and military service members, as well as cooperation in the defense industry. In addition, the agreement obligates Great Britain to "consult with Ukraine" in the event of another conflict with Russia and provide Kiev with long-term support in matters of defense.
