MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. The Russian Investigative Committee is investigating criminal cases against over 590 mercenaries from 46 countries fighting on Ukraine’s side, including US, Georgian and British nationals, Investigative Committee Chairman Alexander Bastrykin told TASS on Wednesday.
"Most of the individuals identified by us and participating in combat operations as mercenaries are citizens of the United States, Georgia, Great Britain, Canada, Israel, Germany, Lithuania and Latvia. As a whole, criminal proceedings are underway against 593 foreigners from 46 states," he said.
The Russian Investigative Committee is establishing jointly with other law enforcement agencies all the circumstances of criminal offences committed by foreign mercenaries, determining their location and working through the issues of holding them criminally liable, Russia’s top investigator said.
"For example, recently a verdict was passed against Georgian citizen Mamuka Gatsarelia who had fought on the side of the Ukrainian armed forces as a foreign mercenary," Bastrykin said.
