New Russia's regions may vote with Ukrainian passports — Central Election Commission
"This is a perfectly reasonable and correct decision for this particular period, until the situation stabilizes," Ella Pamfilova added
MOSCOW, December 26. /TASS/. Residents of Russia's new regions will be able to vote in the upcoming Russian presidential election in March 2024 with a Ukrainian passport due to the conditions voters face there, but the final decision will be made by local authorities, Russian Central Election Commission head Ella Pamfilova told TASS in an interview.
"In my opinion, this is the only correct decision," she said, answering the question whether it is correct to allow voting with a Ukrainian passport. The CEC chief recalled that during the floods in the Kherson Region caused by the explosion at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant by Ukrainian troops in June, the local residents "lost not only their homes, but also their documents, including Russian passports that had already been issued."
According to Pamfilova, "it is important that people who live there permanently, but for some reason have not yet been able to obtain a Russian passport or something has happened to it have the right to vote using the document that certifies their identity." "This is a perfectly reasonable and correct decision for this particular period, until the situation stabilizes," she added.
Pamfilova recalled that the final decision on what documents can be presented for voting will be made by local authorities.
In December, the Russian Central Election Commission adopted a resolution, according to which the election commissions of the new regions will determine the list of documents that voters will be able to present instead of a passport during the presidential election in March 2024.
