UNSC to get back to Gaza issue, to urge ceasefire — Russia’s UN envoy
Earlier, the UN Security Council passed the draft resolution, authored by Arab nations, which would allow easier access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip
UNITED NATIONS, December 22. /TASS/. The UN Security Council will return to considering the Gaza Strip issue and will unambiguously demand a ceasefire, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said at a Security Council meeting.
"The Security Council’s crystal clear demand for a full-fledged ceasefire remains an imperative. <…> We proceed from the assumption that no matter how much resistance the United States puts up to vindicate its main Middle East ally, the Council will come back to this issue and will clearly and unequivocally demand a cessation to hostilities," he said.
In addition, the diplomat pointed out that Russia "categorically disagrees" with the content of this resolution.
"The responsibility for all possible consequences will lie with those countries that gave their consent to its wording, which was pushed through by the United States. We cannot put our signature on this," Nebenzya said.
Earlier, the UN Security Council passed the draft resolution, authored by Arab nations, which would allow easier access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Thirteen countries supported the resolution, whereas Russia and the US abstained. For the resolution to pass, the draft must get nine votes from Security Council members, with none of its permanent members opposing it. Russia suggested an amendment, which would have returned a call for an immediate cessation of hostilities to the text, but it was blocked by the US.
