US may block UNSC resolution on Gaza in favor of another initiative — Lavrov
The top Russian diplomat expressed hope that the US will not make such a move but did not rule out the opposite, given the history of the US blocking ceasefire resolutions in the past
MARRAKESH, December 20. /TASS/. Russia does not rule out that the US may prevent the adoption of a resolution on Gaza at the UN Security Council in favor of another initiative, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference following the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum.
"As far as I understand, there were representatives from the Biden administration and the Israeli government in Qatar. There was a suggestion of another humanitarian pause <...> for a week in order to swap some number of hostages and prisoners. Yet it just so happened that the Security Council has been considering the relevant issue for several days already. I do not exclude that our American colleagues will come today to a session of the Security Council in New York and say: ‘You know, there is a good suggestion for a week-long humanitarian pause, let’s not adopt a resolution," he said.
