Russian nuclear monitoring system proves commitment to non-proliferation — ministry
The Russian Foreign Ministry described the IMS as an important verification mechanism for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
MOSCOW, December 15. /TASS/. The Russian segment of the International Monitoring System (IMS), which has been completed, reaffirms the country’s commitment to the international non-proliferation regime and arms control, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry described the IMS as an important verification mechanism of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). It comprises a global network of radionuclide, seismic, hydroacoustic and infrasound stations and specialized labs that register data and process it.
"This makes it possible to detect both low-yield and high-yield nuclear tests by any country. Overall, 337 such facilities are to be built and certified all over the globe," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The Russian segment is the second-largest, comprising 31 stations and one radionuclide lab. By completing our segment, the Russian Federation makes an important contribution into tightening control over nuclear tests," it said. "It proves by deed our country’s commitment to maintaining the global regime of non-proliferation and arms control."
Moscow expects to be an example for other countries who are yet to complete the creation of the global network’s national segments.
