Russian Internet regulator uncovers AI bot gathering web data for foreign machine learning
The regulator advised that providers assess the risks to information resources in their areas of responsibility and analyze the degree of threat that the bot may pose to personal data
MOSCOW, December 13. /TASS/. The public network control and monitoring center under Russia’s digital regulator Roskomnadzor has uncovered a search bot operated by the OpenAI company that gathers data from web pages to amass information for foreign machine learning models, the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) said in a notification sent to Russian web hosting providers.
"The Public Communications Network Control and Monitoring Center (PCNCMC) forwards data about the detection of the GPTBot of the OpenAI company, which is viewing and analyzing web pages in search of content to accumulate data in machine learning models," the notification reads.
The PCNCMC has also notified providers that they should assess the risks to information resources in their areas of responsibility and analyze the degree of threat that the bot may pose to personal data, critical information vulnerabilities, and other sensitive information that the bot may be targeting.
"If risks are in place, rules for blocking bot queries to information resources should be applied," the notification recommends as a remedial risk management measure.
