Syrian issue exposes West’s double standards most vividly — Russia’s UN envoy
As stated by Vasily Nebenzia, the West denies the republic the right to self-defense
UNITED NATIONS, November 28. /TASS/. The West’s double standards are on full display with regard to the Syrian Arab Republic, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said on Tuesday.
"The way Western countries treat the Syrian Arab Republic is a clear show of their blatant double standards. While baselessly claiming that Israel - the occupying power - has a right to self-defense in relation to the occupied Palestinian territory, they obviously deny this right to Syrians and the Lebanese when Israelis arbitrarily attack their territories, provoking, among other things, new waves of IDPs [internally displaced persons]. Lately, the Israeli Air Force has not only repeatedly attacked the international airports in Damascus and Aleppo, the main gateways for access of UN assistance to Syria, but also carried out strikes in the area of Deir ez-Zor, Abu Kemal and the Golan Heights," the Russian diplomat told the UN Security Council.
The head of the Russian diplomatic mission added that Israel’s latest air strike on the territory of Syria was delivered on November 26.
"We regard the continued strikes on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the country and the basic norms of international law. We strongly condemn such actions. In these circumstances, the silence of our Western colleagues is very telling, for they cannot but realize the risks stemming from such reckless actions," Nebenzya said.
On November 26, Syrian government radio station Sham FM reported that Israeli forces struck the runways of Damascus International Airport. Earlier, the radio reported explosions in Damascus’ suburban neighborhoods of Mezzeh and Muadamiyah.
