Denmark will violate international law if it stops Russian tankers in its waters — MFA
It was earlier reported that Denmark was going to inspect and detain tankers with Russian oil that navigate through Danish channels
MOSCOW, November 15. /TASS/. The Danish authorities will violate international law if they stop and inspect Russian tankers in their waters, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported citing sources familiar with EU possible new measures, that Denmark was going to inspect and detain, if necessary, tankers with Russian oil that navigate through Danish channels as part of new plans of Brussels to control seaborne deliveries of such oil.
"I will remind you what regulates the passage of ships through the straits. In this case, this is the Copenhagen Treaty of 1857 and the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982. In accordance with these documents, all ships, including Russian ones, have the right to unhindered and safe passage through the Baltic straits. Any violation of these norms or any actions that contradict them are a violation of international law," she said, commenting on this information.
