Lavrov warns against Palestinian-Israeli conflict spreading to Syria
"The ministers pointed to the risk of external forces’ attempts to turn the Middle East in the current explosive situation into an arena for settling political accounts," the ministry noted
MOSCOW, October 31. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned against letting the Palestinian-Israeli conflict spread into Syria and other countries, the Russian foreign ministry said on Tuesday after Lavrov’s call with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad.
"Sergey Lavrov stressed the inadmissibility of the armed escalation spreading to Syria and other countries of the region," it said. "In this context, he pointed to the inadmissibility of Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory, which have become more frequent amid the situation around the Gaza Strip."
"The ministers pointed to the risk of external forces’ attempts to turn the Middle East in the current explosive situation into an arena for settling political accounts," the ministry noted. "They called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, addressing humanitarian problems stemming from the hostilities and discussing a long-term settlement by political and diplomatic means on the basis of international law."
The sides reiterated their commitment to the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on the Syrian settlement on the basis of respect to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
