Russian upper house condemns US move to send carrier strike groups to Middle East
Vladimir Dzhabarov noted that the situation required "urgent measures to prevent a humanitarian disaster in Gaza"
MOSCOW, October 25. /TASS/. Russian senators condemn the US move to send carrier strike groups to the Middle East, said Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy chairman of the Russian Federation Council (the upper house of parliament) Committee on Foreign Affairs.
"We strongly condemn the US moves to send carrier strike groups to the Middle East, flood the region with weapons and sabotage Russian initiatives in the UN Security Council, which are aimed at easing tensions," the senator said at a plenary meeting.
According to him, the United States’ attempt to monopolize the Middle East peace process and its unwillingness to search for a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are the root causes of the crisis. "We believe that it is only possible to prevent a humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip and stop the conflict from spilling over into the neighboring countries through the joint efforts of all interested countries and the entire international community. We are confident that the conflict can only be resolved through finding a long-term political solution based on a generally recognized international legal foundation, which includes the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, which will peacefully coexist with the state of Israel," Dzhabarov emphasized.
He noted that the situation required "urgent measures to prevent a humanitarian disaster in Gaza." There is a need for an immediate ceasefire to provide assistance to all those who need it and conduct hostage exchanges, the senator said.
Tensions in the Middle East flared up again after Hamas militants infiltrated Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7. The Palestinian movement described its attack as a response to the actions of Israeli authorities against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem's Temple Mount. Israel announced a total blockade of Gaza and started carrying out strikes on the Palestinian enclave, as well as on certain areas in Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank. In recent days, the US has been sending reinforcements to the Middle East amid growing tensions in the Israeli-Palestine conflict zone.
