Mevlut Cavusoglu noted that there were some countries and circles pursuing their agendas in the context of elections in Turkey

ANKARA, April 7. /TASS/. Turkey does not want other countries to interfere in the upcoming May 14 presidential and parliamentary elections and does not see such intentions on the part of Russia, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday at a press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

"I thank Mr. Lavrov for his assessment of the upcoming elections. As he has said, we have a democratic state and the elections will be democratic. We do not want other countries to try to exert influence. We do not see and have never seen such intentions on the part of Russia," Cavusoglu said.

At the same time, he noted that there were some countries and circles pursuing their agendas in the context of elections in Turkey. The top diplomat also criticized some of the observers, who requested to monitor the election process.

Lavrov said at a press conference that Turkey had repeatedly proved that it was capable of organizing free and democratic elections. "We’ve talked about this today, my colleague told me that they invite observers from the OSCE, from the Council of Europe. So the legitimate assessments by these observers will probably be given after the elections. Otherwise, I am convinced that Turkey has repeatedly proven that it is capable of organising free and democratic elections," Lavrov said.

Turkey will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14. Four candidates will vie for the presidency, but analysts predict the main struggle will be between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), who was nominated by the opposition as a single candidate. Sociologists do not rule out the possibility of a two-round election.
