Kremlin appreciates UN efforts on grain deal, but 'getting through' to US fails
"As you understand, the deal cannot stand on one foot, therefore, in general, the conditions for the extension are relative," Dmitry Peskov said
MOSCOW, March 14. /TASS/. Russia appreciates the efforts of the UN to implement the grain deal, but it has not been possible to "get through" to the collective West on this issue, as the second part of the deal, which concerns Russia, has not yet been implemented, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday. He was commenting on the extension of the deal for only 60 days.
"We appreciate the efforts that were made [to implement the deal] through the UN, personally by [UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres], but despite this, Mr. Guterres, unfortunately, failed to get through to the collective West," the Kremlin spokesman said.
"Those conditions that were agreed upon as an integral part of the deal were not met," Peskov added.
"As you understand, the deal cannot stand on one foot, therefore, in general, the conditions for the extension are relative," the Kremlin official stated.
"This (extension of the deal - TASS) is a kind of gesture of goodwill on the part of the Russian Federation in the hope that after such a long time, the conditions and obligations that were assumed by the notorious parties will be fulfilled," he concluded.
Russia hopes that the second part of the grain deal, which involves the lifting of restrictions on the supply of Russian agricultural products to world markets, will be fulfilled, Peskov said.
"Exchanges about this issue are ongoing. In fact, everyone agrees that the second part must be fulfilled. We still hope, as part of the goodwill that the Russian side is showing now, that this second part will be implemented," he said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko announced that the grain deal had been extended for 60 days. He added that the deal will be extended on the terms that were previously agreed to.
