Russia’s exit from CoE conventions has no effect on human rights protection — diplomat
It is explained that the regulations of these conventions were integrated into the domestic legislation when they were ratified, and they have stayed there
MOSCOW, February 16. /TASS/. Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe conventions has not affected the system of human rights protection in the country, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko told a plenary meeting of the State Duma lower house of parliament on Thursday.
"It should be emphasized that the withdrawal from the Council of Europe conventions, contrary to a variety of speculation, has not had a negative impact on the system of human rights protection in our country," the diplomat said.
The regulations of these conventions were integrated into the domestic legislation when they were ratified, and they have stayed there, the senior diplomat explained. "The Constitution and Russian legislation in general guarantee a broader range of rights and freedoms than the European Convention on Human Rights," Grushko noted. "Russia remains committed to its obligations under the UN universal human rights conventions, agreements within the Commonwealth of Independent States and other regional organizations," Grushko stressed.
