The administration of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, in order to please the United States, is systematically destroying the positive potential, accumulated over many years in relations with Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a commentary on Tuesday.

She drew attention to the fact that the so-called Northern Territories Day in Japan on February 7 this year "was distinguished by a special intensity of Russophobia - both in statements by officials and in aggressive actions by ultra-right forces near Russian missions."

"As for the petition adopted at the ‘national rally’ held on February 7, we recommend its authors to address their demands for the ‘establishment of Russian-Japanese relations’ and the ‘resumption of visits’ by former residents of the Southern Kurils to ‘the burial places of their relatives’ on the islands directly to the Kishida administration, which systematically ruins the positive potential of bilateral relations, accumulated over many years of mutual efforts, thus neglecting the fundamental interests of its people for the sake of the United States," Zakharova stressed.
