Situation in most of Peru remains tense — Russian embassy

The embassy said "the state of emergency remains in place across the country and there’s still a risk the situation could suddenly escalate"

MOSCOW, February 2. /TASS/. The situation in most of Peru, including its capital, remains tense, the Russian embassy in the country told TASS on Thursday.

"The situation in most of Peru, including the capital Lima and its suburbs, continues to be volatile and tense. At the same time, the government managed to remove blockades on some key roads and get airports to resume operations," the embassy said.

It also said "the situation in the area of the Russian embassy continues to be quiet."

The embassy said "the state of emergency remains in place across the country and there’s still a risk the situation could suddenly escalate."

Protests have erupted in Peru after the ouster of President Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022. Protesters are demanding the resignation of the new president, Dina Boluarte, the shutdown of the parliament and new elections. The protests are accompanied by road blockades in the regions, attacks on airports and clashes with government representatives. About 60 people have been killed in the protests and hundreds have been injured so far.
