MOSCOW, February 1. /TASS/. Moscow believes that it’s crucial for the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) to remain in effect though there is little hint of continued dialogue on the matter, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.
"The hints are few but, no matter how sad the situation is at the moment, some hint should remain. We believe that it’s crucial for the treaty to stay in effect as it is actually the only one that remains, if not viable, at least hypothetically viable," he pointed out.
Peskov added that the United States "has in fact destroyed the legal framework in the field of arms control."
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier, citing a US Department of State’s report, that Washington believed Russia had violated New START by blocking US inspections and denying Washington a meeting to discuss compliance with the treaty.
