New US envoys’ task not to do any more harm to bilateral relations, says Russian diplomat

According to Maria Zakharova, all Tracy’s predecessors "spared no effort" to make sure relations deteriorated

MOSCOW, January 30. /TASS/. The most important task for new US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy is to not do any further harm to bilateral relations, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday.

"The most important thing for her now is not to further sour bilateral relations," she said in an interview with the Zvezda television channel.

According to the Russian diplomat, all Tracy’s predecessors "spared no effort" to make sure relations deteriorated. "It started globally with [former Ambassador Michael] McFaul, who did everything he could here to go down in history as a man who was literally driven out of here. Afterwards, things did not improve," she said.

Zakharova noted that the Russian side did its best to make sure Lynne Tracy arrived safely in Moscow amid the Russian public’s discontent with Washington’s policy. "We have done much to ensure her security because if she was faced with what our people really think about the United States, she wouldn’t be happy. We are doing our best to make her trip a safe one. People are angry," she added.
