Resolution of Ukrainian crisis depends on situation on ground, not sanctions — diplomat

MOSCOW, January 27. /TASS/. The resolution of the Ukrainian crisis depends on the actual situation on the ground and there is no need to talk about relaxing sanctions, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Friday.
On Thursday, during hearings at the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said that the Biden administration was ready to consider easing certain sanctions on Russia in the event of serious talks on Ukraine. She clarified that some easing of restrictions may occur "in the context of Russia's decision to negotiate seriously and withdraw its troops from Ukraine and return territories."
"The development of relations will proceed from assessing the actual situation on the ground and not from some secondary statements that if Russia does something then, maybe, some sanctions will be lifted, like Washington said. Who is listening to this at all, who needs this? This is not the issue. Against the background of heavy arms being delivered to Ukraine, there is no need to talk about what will happen if somebody does something. There is a situation on the ground that we are dealing with," the diplomat said.
