US neglect of Moscow’s red lines impeding strategic dialogue, senior Russian diplomat says

Sergey Ryabkov pointed out that there had been "some ups and downs" in terms of arms control during the Cold War

MOSCOW, January 26. /TASS/. The United States’ failure to show a balanced approach to Moscow’s red lines is affecting the prospects for resuming strategic dialogue, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in an interview with the Kommersant daily, published on Thursday.

"The parties showed balanced approaches to each other’s security red lines at certain times during the Cold War in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This cannot be said about those who are in charge in Washington today. It certainly affects the prospects for resuming strategic dialogue," he pointed out.

The senior Russian diplomat pointed out that there had been "some ups and downs" in terms of arms control during the Cold War. "This is where there is a direct correlation with the overall political situation and relations between the parties. As a rule, the most successful decisions in the field of arms control were made during or were related to the periods of detente or specific political projects," Ryabkov emphasized.
