MASSAWA, January 26. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Eritrea on a working visit, a TASS correspondent reported.
While in Eritrea, Lavrov is expected to meet with the country’s President Isaias Afwerki and Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed.
The Russian top diplomat previously visited South Africa, Eswatini and Angola as part of his African tour. Eritrea is expected to be the final stop of Lavrov’s trip.
Eritrea is a southeastern African country on the Red Sea. Under the country’s constitution, Eritrea is a republic. However, the constitution, adopted on May 24, 1997, will not enter into force until parliamentary and presidential elections take place. The elections, initially scheduled for 2001, were postponed indefinitely and have not been held yet.
Diplomatic relations between Russia and Eritrea were established on May 24, 1993. In April 2022, Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed made a visit to Moscow. Eritrea was one of the countries that voted against a UN resolution condemning Russia over the situation in Ukraine in March 2022.
