West intends to continue to 'poke' China on Tibet, Hong Kong, Xinjiang — Lavrov

It is noted that the US and other countries regularly speak out on Hong Kong’s allegedly infringed-upon autonomy

MOSCOW, January 18. /TASS/. The West will continue to "prod" China on various issues, including on Tibet, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"China is well aware of <...> Western doctrinal provisions that now it is Russia, and then China, that this is not a joke. They (Western countries - TASS) have already displayed their positions on Taiwan and these are absolutely unacceptable for China, for international law. They are looking for more and more opportunities to ‘poke’ China both on Tibet, and on Xinjiang, and on Hong Kong, so China understands that staying in the Western system, completely depending on the West carries with it very serious risks," the Russian top diplomat noted at a press conference on Russian diplomacy in 2022 on Wednesday.

For instance, the US and other countries regularly speak out on Hong Kong’s allegedly infringed-upon autonomy. On December 9, the US introduced sanctions under the pretext of human rights violations in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region against former Communist Party Secretary of that region Wu Yingjie and Director of the Tibetan Public Security Bureau Zhang Hongbo.

On December 23, 2021, US President Joe Biden signed a law restricting the import of goods from Xinjiang as well as introducing sanctions against individuals and organizations responsible, according to the US, for the alleged use of "forced labor" in that region. Previously, the US accused Beijing of persecuting Uyghur activists, branding China’s policy in the region as "genocide and crimes against humanity."
