‘Astana trio’ summit may be held in mid-2023, says Russian envoy

It is noted that there is always a lot to discuss within the framework of the Astana trio at the summit level

MOSCOW, November 28./TASS/. A summit with the participation of Russia, Iran and Turkey in the Astana format may take place in the middle of next year in Sochi, Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said in an interview with TASS on Monday

According to him, work on the summit meeting is in progress, but it is still premature to give a concrete timeframe. "It all depends on the work schedule of our president [Vladimir Putin]. Of course, the fact that this meeting is to take place on the territory of the Russian Federation makes the situation easier," the envoy said.

"And, most likely, it will be held in Sochi. The Syrian National Dialogue Congress was once held there. And in terms of time, I think we should count on somewhere in the middle of next year," Lavrentyev said.

"Two years have passed since the summit in Turkey. We were all waiting for the summit in Tehran, but coronavirus interfered, followed by other aggravating factors, so only in July 2022 were we able to hold the summit in Tehran. The issue here is not even so much about logistics, as it is about agreeing on the format. There is always a lot to discuss within the framework of the Astana trio at the summit level," the presidential envoy added.
