"The session of the bilateral consultative commission on the Russia-US New START treaty, which was originally scheduled to be held in Cairo from November 29 - December 6, will not take place on the indicated dates. The meeting has been postponed to a later date," he said.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said earlier that one of the key topics to be discussed by the commission at the Cairo meeting would be the resumption of inspections under the New START treaty. Among other important topics that are to be addressed, Ryabkov cited the problem of strategic carriers the United States claims to have re-equipped with non-nuclear warheads.
The Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (the New START Treaty) was signed in 2010 and entered into force on February 5, 2011. In February 2021, Moscow and Washington extended the treaty for the maximum possible of five years, until 2026.
