Kremlin rejects US theory of Russia being ‘responsible’ for missile crash in Poland
"This logic can be adhered to but then you have to be fair and rewind the situation already methodically," Dmitry Peskov stressed
MOSCOW, November 17. /TASS/. The Kremlin disagrees with Washington’s conclusions that Moscow is still complicit in the incident where debris from a Ukrainian S-300 air defense missile fell on Polish soil, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.
As the US administration explained earlier, it was certain about the accuracy of Warsaw’s conclusions that the missile crashing into Polish territory was of Ukrainian origin. However, it ultimately blamed Russia for the incident there.
The Kremlin spokesman suggested continuing this string of logic.
"What does Washington say? Washington says that had it not been for Russia’s missile strikes, there would have been no S-300 missile interceptor launched by the Ukrainian armed forces," Peskov said.
However, as the Kremlin press secretary insisted, "if this logic is followed, then, it is possible to rewind the situation." "And then it is possible to come to the conclusion that had it not been for the complete unwillingness of the US and the North Atlantic alliance to take into account Russia’s concern and the unwillingness to discuss with Russia the draft treaties that we worked out and conveyed, then there would have been no need for the special military operation," the Kremlin press secretary said.
As Peskov pointed out, had the United States and NATO "restrained the Kiev regime" at that time and given guarantees that "it would not stage a new round of a civil war" or attack the population of the two independent republics with heavy artillery and tanks, then "there would have been no need for the special military operation."
"This logic can be adhered to but then you have to be fair and rewind the situation already methodically," the Kremlin spokesman stressed.
A missile crashed in the village of Przewodow in eastern Poland’s Lublin Voivodeship close to the border with Ukraine on November 15, killing two people. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky accused Russia of the missile attack and urged the West "to begin to act."
However, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that according to the assessment of the republic’s authorities, the missile was fired by Ukraine’s air defense forces. The US Department of State said that the US administration was certain about the accuracy of the conclusions made by the Polish authorities.
The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed Kiev’s allegations over the incident as "a blatant provocation." Based on the information from the Russian Defense Ministry, the missile was fired from a Ukrainian S-300 air defense system.
