It is reported that the construction of the barbed wire fence will be carried out quickly since soldiers have the experience of creating such barriers on the Polish-Belarusian border

WARSAW, November 2. /TASS/. Poland has begun building a temporary barbed wire fence on the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak told a press briefing on Wednesday.

"Today, field engineers and soldiers from the Polish armed forces are beginning work to build a temporary fence on the Polish-Russian border," he said, stressing that the barrier would be 2.5 meters high and 3 meters wide.

"The fence will consist of three rows of barbed wire used by armies across the world. There will be three layers," the defense minister specified. "On the Polish side, there will be an enclosure for animal protection," he added.

As Blaszczak explained, Poland made this decision after Russia’s aviation authority decided to launch flights from the Middle East and North Africa to Kaliningrad, which Warsaw claims allegedly creates a migration influx threat.

"I have decided to take steps that will enhance security on Poland’s border with the Kaliningrad Region by strengthening this border," Blaszczak stated.

The construction of the barbed wire fence will be carried out quickly since soldiers have the experience of creating such barriers on the Polish-Belarusian border, he noted.

Strengthening Poland’s border

Poland began building a new 186 km fence on the border with Belarus in January over the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. The barrier is 5.5 meters high and is outfitted with modern surveillance devices, including motion cameras and sensors.

In early October, reports emerged that the Polish border guard service had received funds for building an electronic fence on the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Region. As Blaszczak explained, this work would be carried out along with the construction of the temporary barbed wire fence.

Poland has a 418 km border with Belarus and a 210 km overland border section with Russia.
