West seeks to drive a wedge between UN General Assembly member states — Foreign Ministry
The Ministry noted that Russia proposed holding a secret vote on the project due to the enormous pressure that UNGA member states had been subjected to, which included threats of sanctions
MOSCOW, October 13. /TASS/. Western states are seeking to drive a wedge between UN General Assembly states and prolong the conflict in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in its statement on the UNGA anti-Russian resolution on the referendums in its new regions.
"The West seeks to solve its own problems in order to neutralize Russia, to keep its elusive monopoly on global affairs, and to drive a wedge between UN General Assembly member states. It is also obvious that this adversarial approach is definitely aimed not at finding a peaceful solution, but to prolong the conflict in Ukraine," the statement reads.
The Ministry called the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution condemning the referendums as ‘odious.’ The Ministry noted that Russia proposed holding a secret vote on the project due to the enormous pressure that UNGA member states had been subjected to, which included threats of sanctions.
"Obviously, this would have made it possible for many delegations to express their true position, without being afraid of the consequences of ‘wrong’ - from the standpoint of Washington and its satellites - decisions. However, this proposal was rejected after unscrupulous maneuvers, organized by our opponents in violation of all existing rules of operation of the General Assembly," the Ministry said.
"There is no doubt that this resolution, despite its name, has nothing to do with the protection of the UN Charter. Claims of adherence to international law, made by the US and other NATO states are nothing but evidence of double standards, and there are numerous convincing examples. They were at the forefront as supporters of Kosovo's "independence," insisting on its right to secession, despite the absence of a real threat to the civilian population. Another example: the US’ statements about its willingness to use force to protect Taiwan, which is an inseparable part of China," the Ministry said.
In this regard, the ministry underscored that the referendums in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions took place in full compliance with the UN Charter, the norms and principles of international law and the 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law, which guarantees territorial integrity only to states with governments "representing the whole people belonging to the territory without distinction as to race, creed or color."
"It is perfectly clear that the Kiev authorities have not met and do not meet this criterion, actively using terrorist methods against civilians and civilian infrastructure," the Ministry added.
