Referendums in Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions comply with UN Charter — diplomat
Konstantin Vorontsov said that the results of the plebiscite speak for themselves
UNITED NATIONS, October 6. /TASS/. Referendums in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions on their accession to Russia fully comply with the principle of equality and the right of peoples to self-determination enshrined in the UN Charter, Konstantin Vorontsov, Deputy Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control, said at the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
"The results of the plebiscite speak for themselves. The residents of Donbass, the Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions exercised their lawful right to self-determination and made a conscious choice in favor of Russia, they had the opportunity to independently and freely express their opinion as confirmed by many observers, including international ones," the diplomat said. "This step fully complies with the principle of equality and self-determination of peoples as enshrined in the UN Charter, the 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and in many other documents," he explained.
