Putin to hold phone talk with Turkish president Erdogan on Monday
The leaders of Russia and Turkey have had several phone conversations since the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine
MOSCOW, May 30. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a phone talk with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday.
Erdogan made the announcement about the talk on Sunday, and the information has been confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The leaders of Russia and Turkey will once again discuss the situation in Ukraine in the context of Russia’s special military operation to defend the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. Moreover, Erdogan is expected to hold a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on May 30.
Commenting on the upcoming talks, Erdogan said that Russia's attitude to Sweden and Finland’s plans to join NATO was "not positive." Moscow is particularly concerned about Finland, the Turkish leader said.
Earlier, Erdogan said his country would not support the NATO membership of those countries until they review their attitude to terrorist organizations, in particular to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which Ankara had designated as such. Later, Erdogan explained that Ankara may change its stance if Stockholm and Helsinki clearly demonstrate their solidarity on security issues.
The leaders of Russia and Turkey have had several phone conversations since the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. The latest talks were held on April 28 and 26, and were focused on the situation in Ukraine. Besides, Putin thanked Erdogan for his aid in the swap of US citizen Trevor Reed for US-jailed Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko.
Russian President Vladimir Putin regularly holds phone conversations with leaders of other countries. In May, he talked to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and others. On May 28, Putin held a joint phone conversations with the leaders of France and Germany, Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz.
