MOSCOW, May 17. /TASS/. Moscow will have to seek compensating measures when Finland and Sweden join NATO, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergey Ryabkov, has said.

"You see, they do not know themselves what they really want. They are tormented by their own misunderstanding of what a future world will be like. They suffer from the inevitability this world will be multipolar," Ryabkov said on the Rossiya-24 round-the-clock television news channel on Tuesday. "When the period of analysis in Moscow of the effects of this step on the general configuration of forces and in Europe and the north of Europe is over, we will have to take compensatory measures, and nobody will stand to gain."

Sweden’s government on Monday made an official decision to apply for NATO membership. According to the Swedish prime minister, the application will be lodged along with Finland in the near future.

Discussions on Finland’s possible accession to NATO intensified in early April. The alliance’s key members have supported the idea. Most of Finland’s parliament members have already upheld the idea of joining the bloc.
