Russia says it’s futile to expect North Korea to disarm under threat of sanctions - envoy
It is absolutely unrealistic to expect Pyongyang’s unconditional disarmament under the threat of an unwinding spiral of sanctions and the guarantees of unsupported promises, Anna Evstigneeva said
UNITED NATIONS, May 12. /TASS/. Russia views as futile the expectations that North Korea will disarm under the threat of new sanctions, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Anna Evstigneeva said at a session of the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
"We would like to remind our US counterparts that negotiations are a ‘two-way street’. It is absolutely unrealistic to expect Pyongyang’s unconditional disarmament under the threat of an unwinding spiral of sanctions and the guarantees of unsupported promises," the diplomat stressed.
"The appearance of new military blocs in the region, such as the alliance of the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, gives rise to serious doubts about the good intentions of those countries, including in Pyongyang, and cannot help promote the dialogue," she added.
