Putin congratulates Serbia’s Vucic with victory in presidential elections
Aleksandar Vucic won with 59.55% of votes
MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to Aleksandar Vucic, congratulating him with a convincing victory in the Serbian presidential elections, Kremlin press office announced Monday, adding that the Russian leader expects that Vucic will continue to facilitate the reinforcement of the strategic partnership between Moscow and Belgrade.
"The President of Russia noted that the election outcome fully reflects Serbian people’s wide support of Aleksandar Vucic’s course, aimed at resolving pressing social and economic tasks and on carrying out an independent foreign policy," the press office said.
"I expect that your work as the national leader will continue to facilitate the strengthening of relations of strategic partnership that exist between our countries. This undoubtedly corresponds with the interests of the brotherly peoples of Russia and Serbia," the Russian leader underscored.
On Sunday, presidential and snap parliamentary elections took place in Serbia. According to the National Electoral Commission, after counting 90% of ballots, Vucic won with 59.55% of votes.
Vucic, 52, served as Prime Minister of Serbia since 2014, and first became the president in 2017. Speaking at the Serbian Progressive Party press conference after the elections, Vucic stated that Serbia will remain a militarily neutral country and will seek to preserve the relations of partnership and friendship with Russia.
