Argentina keeps in contact with Russia despite situation around Ukraine, says envoy
There is a number of agreements that have been concluded in the best interests of both states, the diplomat added
BUENOS AIRES, March 7. /TASS/. Argentinian authorities keep in contact with Russia despite the current situation around Ukraine, Russia's Ambassador to Buenos Aires Dmitry Feoktistov said in an interview with El Cronista business daily published on Monday.
"Despite the current difficult situation contacts between capitals have not been interrupted. We are convinced that channels for dialogue should always remain open for direct transfer of information," he said.
There is a number of agreements that have been concluded in the best interests of both states, the diplomat added. "We suggest that nothing has changed in this regard. We believe that the fundamental interests of a state in various areas should not depend on the political situation and how the situation develops in the global arena. At least we will not be the first to offer a revision of existing agreements," he noted.
Earlier, Foreign Minister of the South American republic Santiago Cafiero said that Argentina did not think sanctions could serve as an efficient instrument to search for a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine. That said, Buenos Aires condemned Russia’s special operation in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on February 24 that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in Ukraine, stressing that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories. Western countries responded to the actions of the Russian authorities by slapping sanctions against physical and legal entities.
