All the more so, Kiev’s possession of nuclear weapons is absolutely ruled out, Alexey Polishchuk noted

MOSCOW, March 6. /TASS/. The demilitarization of Ukraine means that no weapons that may pose even a potential threat to Russia remain on the country’s territory, Alexey Polishchuk, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s second department of the CIS countries, said in an interview with TASS.

"Russia began its special military operation exactly to prevent Ukraine from getting such [nuclear] weapons. When the operation’s main goal - demilitarization - is achieved, no weapons that pose even a potential threat to Russia can be deployed on the territory of Ukraine," he said.

"All the more so, Kiev’s possession of nuclear weapons is absolutely ruled out. It is impossible to imagine what could happen if Ukrainian nationalists gain access to a nuclear bomb," the diplomat added.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky had told the Munich Security Conference Ukraine might review its obligations under the Budapest Memorandum and reconsider its non-nuclear status.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin in response to the appeal of the leaders of the republics of Donbass, decided to conduct a special military operation. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow’s plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories. After that, the US, EU, and UK, as well as several other states, announced that they were imposing sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities.
