Poland ready to embargo Russian coal upon EC’s approval, asks Australia for supplies
Sanctions on Russia must be "as far-reaching as possible," Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said
WARSAW, March 2. /TASS/. Poland is ready to abandon coal from Russia "at any time," but it needs a permission of the European Commission (EC), Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told a joint briefing with Head of the European Council Charles Michel on Wednesday.
Warsaw is ready to introduce an embargo on Russian coal "at any time," he said. "We only need assurance from the European Commission that it will not penalize us for this step," he noted, adding that the implementation of the embargo is a decision regarding international trade and a competence that has been transferred to the European Commission.
Moreover, Poland has asked Australia to supply coal to the country, Morawiecki said. "I talked about it today with the Prime Minister of Australia <…> to transport coal to Poland from there," he said.
Sanctions on Russia must be "as far-reaching as possible," according to Polish PM. "A blockade on various types of hydrocarbons from Russia - oil, gas and coal - should be part of the sanctions package," he noted.
