Russia welcomes convening of donor conference on Afghanistan under UN auspices, says Putin

Earlier, the Russian president initiated the resumption of activities of the SCO-Afghanistan contact group established at some point for working with the Afghan partners

NOVO-OGARYOVO, September 17. /TASS/. Russia welcomes the idea to convene an international donor conference on Afghanistan under the UN auspices, President Vladimir Putin said at a joint meeting of the leaders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Friday.

"Russia welcomes the idea to convene representatives of the international donor conference on Afghanistan under the UN auspices," he said.

Earlier, the Russian leader initiated the resumption of activities of the SCO-Afghanistan contact group established at some point for working with the Afghan partners, he noted. "According to the statements made by the Taliban (the Taliban movement outlawed in Russia — TASS) itself, it considers the reconstruction of ruined infrastructure in the country an important task. Obviously, all understand it, and everyone in Afghanistan understands that the Taliban itself can hardly do it," Putin said when speaking about the relevance of the donor conference.
