Kremlin regrets European Parliament’s report on reviewing relations with Russia
"The only reason to make allowances for it is that the document is just a recommendation," Dmitry Peskov noted
MOSCOW, September 16. /TASS/. The European Parliament’s move to approve a report that calls for reviewing relations with Russia is regrettable, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday.
"The essence of the document is truly regrettable. It’s most unfortunate that it’s not about establishing dialogue and the need to solve the existing problems by way of communication at various levels and through various channels," he pointed out. "The only reason to make allowances for it is that the document is just a recommendation," Peskov added.
The European Parliament earlier approved a report calling on the EU authorities to review relations with Russia. The document also recommends developing "a comprehensive EU strategy towards Russia" based on the principles set out in the report. In particular, the document says that the EU should push back against the security threat, deter Russia’s interference in the affairs of member states and Eastern Partnership countries, maintain selective dialogue with the Kremlin and engage with Russian civil society. The report adds that "the EU must be prepared not to recognize the Parliament of Russia <...> if the 2021 parliamentary elections in Russia are recognized as fraudulent and having been conducted in violation of democratic principles and international law.".
