Putin confident Russia’s Constitution will remain the country’s legal basis for decades

Vladimir Putin recalled that important constitutional changes had taken place in Russia in 2020

MOSCOW, July 15. /TASS/. Russia’s Constitution approved almost 30 years ago has proved its effectiveness and will remain a reliable legal foundation for the country for many years to come, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

"Adopted almost 30 years ago, on December 12, 1993, our Constitution has convincingly proved its effectiveness, and it will remain a reliable legal basis for the country for many decades to come," the head of state stressed in a telegram posted on the Kremlin website on Thursday.

He noted that the Constitution was of particular importance to Russia, just like to every modern democracy. "This is the state’s principal law, an act of direct action, which has the highest legal status and guarantees basic living conditions for citizens. It embodies the strength and the potential of the state and law, and their value framework," he emphasized.

At the same time, the Constitution is "not a frozen code of canons, but a living document in sync with the times," the president went on to say. "It must be relevant, and serve the needs and demands of people," he stressed.

Amended Constitution

Putin recalled that important constitutional changes had taken place in Russia in 2020. They reflected "the consolidated will of the Russian people, becoming a fitting response to the challenges of today, an expression of common aspirations and hopes associated with the present and future of our Homeland," he pointed out.

According to the head of state, a broad discussion took place when work on the constitutional amendments was in progress. The world’s experience and modern trends in the development of constitutional law were taken into account as well. In the course of that discussion, the key initiatives of Russians, who were "actually the principal authors and creators of the constitutional amendments", were systematized and summarized, Putin added.
