MOSCOW, July 1. /TASS/. Russian diplomats plan to visit Russian national Sofia Sapega currently under home arrest in Belarus, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday.

"A Russian consul visited Sofia Sapega while she was in detention in the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB) facility. Since June 23, her prevention measure has been changed to house arrest. Another consular visit to the Russian citizen is expected shortly. This matter is on agenda of Russian-Belarusian contacts," she said.

Zakharova noted that the Russian Embassy in Minsk continues to protect Sapega’s rights in cooperation with her relatives and lawyers.

Sapega was detained on May 23 in the Minsk Airport, together with Roman Protasevich, a co-founder of the Nexta Telgram channel, deemed extremist in Belarus, following the emergency landing of a Ryanair plane. Later, Sapega confessed on camera that she is an editor of the Black Book of Belarus Telegram channel, which publishes personal information about Belarusian law enforcement officers. Sapega was charged with incitement of social enmity and hate, and may face up to 12 years in prison under the Belarusian law.

On June 23, Protasevich and Sapega were put under house arrest. The suspect signed a pre-trial agreement with the investigation. The Investigative Committee of Belarus disclosed that the two gave confessional testimonies.
