Some states address information security issues from position of force — Russia’s UN envoy

According to Vassily Nebenzia, the topic of international information security "in a matter of years have turned from a narrow technical issue into one of the most crucial areas of international diplomacy"

UNITED NATIONS, June 23. /TASS/. Certain countries are trying to resolve cybersecurity issues from a position of power, particularly resorting to accusations of conducting cyberattacks, Russia’s envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told the Moscow Conference on International Security on Wednesday. 

According to the diplomat, the topic of international information security "in a matter of years have turned from a narrow technical issue into one of the most crucial areas of international diplomacy." The Russian diplomat noted that as the universal aspiration for digitalization grows "so does the vulnerability of users, society and state before cybersecurity threats."

"Certain countries are trying to impose their rules in the information sphere from a position of force," he underlined. "Unfortunately, unproven accusations of organizing cyberattacks are becoming a very convenient pretext to exert political pressure over sovereign states and to heighten tensions." At the same time, he noted, "simultaneously, terrorists and criminals are also actively exploring the digital sphere.".
