Russia welcomes US decision to withdraw demand for sanctions against Iran

According to the deputy foreign minister, Washington's move indicates intent to preserve the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action

MOSCOW, February 19. /TASS/. Russia welcomes the US decision to withdraw the demand for UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told TASS Friday, adding that this indicates Washington’s intention to preserve the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"We welcome Washington’s decision to withdraw the Trump Administration’s position on restoration of sanctions against Iran via the UN Security Council, which we considered ungrounded and basically illegal. All this indicates certain intent to achieve results on the political and diplomatic track, which means preservation of the JCPOA," he said.

Ryabkov noted that this US position corresponds to Russia’s approach. "But this is not enough, we must move forward. We will facilitate that," he said.
