Moscow unaware of Borrell’s plans to meet with Navalny

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova recalled that the EU foreign policy chief’s visit was a planned one

MOSCOW, February 4. /TASS/. Russia’s Foreign Ministry is unaware of the plans of EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who will be visiting Moscow on February 4-6, to have a meeting with blogger Alexey Navalny, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in an interview with Dozhd TV channel on Wednesday.

"It is a question for Borrell and those who are arranging his visit. Let them somehow get into contact with relevant agencies and negotiate. I am unaware of these intentions. It is his wish, so let them implement it somehow," she said.

Zakharova recalled that the EU foreign policy chief’s visit was a planned one.

"They will be discussing the entire range of relations between Russia and the European Union, as there are loads of opportunities for cooperation as well as problems. But this visit is a scheduled one. I think that the human rights issue will be brought up as well. We have what to talk about with the EU," she noted.

On Tuesday, Moscow’s Simonovsky Court converted Alexey Navalny’s 3.5-year suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case into a real prison term at a hearing in the Moscow City Court. Navalny will serve his term in a minimum security penal colony. He will be kept at a pre-trial detention center until the ruling comes into effect.
