Medvedev noted that the term "lifetime senator" means that the former president gets this job until the end of his life

GORKI, February 1. /TASS/. Deputy Chairman of Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has no plans so far to use his right as a former president to become a lifetime senator.

"So far, I consider myself a rather young politician and a rather young man on the whole," Medvedev said in an interview with Russian media in response to a question on whether he plans to become a lifetime senator.

He noted that the term "lifetime senator" means that the former president gets this job until the end of his life.

"I think that such decisions should be made at a slightly different age, weighing all the circumstances existing in any man’s life," he explained, stressing that he is dealing with other issues that are more important right now than implementing this idea.

In December 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the updated formation of the upper chamber of parliament, which contains the inclusion of lifetime senators and gives former presidents the right to become senators after handing in a written request. This procedure was changed in accordance with the approved amendments to the Russian Constitution. Speaker of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko said earlier that the law does not stipulate any particular time frame for a former president to hand over a request for becoming a lifetime senator.
