Embassy vows to provide consular assistance to Russian detained on Pacific Island

WASHINGTON, January 9. /TASS/. The Russian Embassy in the US will provide all necessary consular assistance to Dmitry Makarenko, who was detained on the island of Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands) at the request of the FBI. This is according to a statement of the diplomatic mission, published on Wednesday in the social network Vkontakte.

"According to the information available at the embassy, the Russian is held at the Honolulu prison in the state of Hawaii, where he is waiting for his transfer to Miami (Florida), where the trial of his case will take place. Currently, we are trying to get consular access to our compatriot. We will provide all necessary assistance to Makarenko to respect his legal rights," the embassy said.

"The embassy continues to closely monitor the arrest of Russian citizen Makarenko, detained by FBI officers on Saipan Island, Northern Mariana Islands, on charges of an attempt of export military equipment export and money laundering," the diplomatic mission stresses.

Makarenko was detained on Saipan on December 29 at the request of the FBI on charges of attempts to export military equipment to Russia from the US. The indictment was issued by a Florida court on June 15, 2017. He is accused of a plot with an aim to attempt to illegally export military night vision equipment and thermal imagery devices to Russia, as well as of money laundering.
