RIGA, December 11. /TASS/. Russia’s Embassy in Latvia had condemned the act of vandalism against a memorial to the Soviet soldiers in Riga who died during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) and voiced hope that the perpetrators of the attack will be held accountable, the diplomatic mission said on its Facebook page.
"A vile act of vandalism was committed in Riga at a big military cemetery in Ziepniekkalns, where several thousands of Soviet prisoners of war were buried who died in Nazi captivity in 1941-1945, as well as hundreds of Holocaust victims and hostages," the Embassy said.
The unknown attackers damaged the granite monument, cutting a piece of it and drawing obscene words on the monument’s pedestal. "We expect the Latvian public’s adequate response to this flagrant act of vandalism."
The Russian Embassy also hopes that the Latvian authorities will take urgent measures to rectify damage to the monument and hold an investigation to bring those guilty of this act of vandalism to responsibility. "We expect that the necessary efforts will be made to prevent these acts of hooliganism in the future," the diplomatic mission said.
